It’s amazing how many new words are showing up in our vocabulary these days. Tappening is the name of a new movement encouraging people not to buy bottled water. The word, a combination of the word tap and happening is beginning to become quite popular. The conundrum people have is that most tap water is contaminated with a number of by-products of chlorine, in addition to chemicals that are plaguing a lot of municipal water systems.
Besides, most bottled water and water that is home delivered is reverse osmosis water. This type of water is very acidic. It’s like drinking a cola beverage without the caffeine and the sugar, but acidic nonetheless. It is actually banned in Europe for drinking purposes. It has a skull and crossbones on it. Retailers in Europe are only allowed to sell it to put in your car radiator and places like that. You are also advised not to feed it to your pets. Here, they seem to sell anything they can get away with. Aside from being highly acidic, reverse osmosis water is also very expensive. The mark up on this bottled and barreled water is about 1900 percent. Conservative estimates suggest that an average family of 4 would spend $5600 per year if they used bottled water exclusively. Conversely the average person would save approximately $1400 per year if they switched back to a non-bottled product.
Of course, if bottled water was as safe and sanitary as the bottling company suggests, you might be able to justify the fact that it is in fact better than tap water. But in a National Resource Defense Council study, over a four year period, with 1000 different brands of bottled water, approximately one-third were found to violate the water quality standards for their own industry. When I say ‘water quality standards’, I mean what the industry says they will volunteer to do, not what has been regulated by law.
The FDA in the US, oversees the bottled water industry under certain circumstances. If you open a water bottling plant and you sell bottled water in the state in which the plant exists, the FDA doesn’t scrutinize you. The moment you sell bottled water across a state line, you come under the scrutiny of one part-time person that is supposed to oversee the whole country. Yah, right!
As far, as tap water is concerned, I have a great deal of difficulty accepting that water right out the tap is safe to drink. As a member of the alkaline, ionized water industry and a holistic clinician, I see the results of tap water contamination in my clients. After a week of drinking alkaline, ionized water, they see it too. I feel very strongly that unless the tap water is filtered and ionized, you can get all sorts of contaminants coming out the tap. Countertop filter systems like Brita do not remove all of the harmful constituents that can be found in the water, depending on where you live.
Clean, safe, healthy water is paramount for health. Unless you have the genetic makeup of desert nomads, you require lots of water during your waking hours to remain healthy and free of chronic disease as you get older. Tests done by private testing labs is showing that the best quality water comes from a water ionizer.
Since there are two types of water ionizers, flat cell and round cell, it is important to know the difference. In a nutshell, flat cell technology is what is in all of the common ionizers you see on the market today. The problem with them all, is that even the inefficient, low-performing machines claim their unit is the best. Since everyone says their machine is really the best, which one is really the best? It took me a long time to buy my ionizer. I talked to a lot of people, did a lot of research, tasted a lot of water and made my own decision, independent of all of the ‘best machines’ out there.
What I found was that if I was going to drink lots of healthy water, I wanted it to taste good. I didn’t want to have to choke it down like it was a chore. Believe me some of the water from the ‘best machines’ tasted terrible.
I also didn’t want to have to clean my machine. I lead a full and busy life. I don’t have time to clean a machine, and I want to have access to my water when I want to drink it. Most machines out there, have some aspect of manual cleaning to them. Some you cannot use while they are cleaning, so you have to plan ahead.
The filters in the ‘best machine’ are also important. If the filters don’t filter out what is in your particular water, they are of no value to keep you healthy and toxin-free. Minute traces of toxin that can be found in water supplies can build up in your body over time, until they create symptoms. Where I live, there are minute traces of arsenic in the water. The level is below the acceptable levels so everyone is told the water is safe. Yet I have two clients who have arsenic poisoning and have become very sick. But, that is only two people in 20,000 you say. Yes, it is two too many. I wonder how many others have arsenic poisoning and don’t know it. These clients are drinking alkaline, ionized water and their health is improving.
I have absolutely no problem tappening, as long as my water comes out of a water ionizer. I have no problem boycotting bottled water. It takes a lot of energy and industry to make the bottles and the contents is usually highly acidic unless it contains spring water. Even spring water at a pH 6.0 to 7.0 is still not alkaline enough to promote health and the ability of any bottled water to create free radicals in the body is astounding. I get enough free radicals from my food metabolism, thank you very much. I don’t need to add to it with the water I drink.
By the way, I chose the Athena water ionizer from Ionways. www.drink-ionized-water.com. I have been field testing alkaline, ionized water with my clients for over a year now and we are all pleased with the results.
